Exclusive DJMAG.ca Interview:
Prograsmz is just the stage name of a producer, remixer and DJ. His core music styles of Drum and Bass, Dubstep and all things Bass music have lead him into the production world in a mission to shape his own sound.
He was brought up in a community where there was not much exposure to outside sources of music. Inspiration came from late night internet searches and yearly trips to underground music festivals. An electric guitar and an uncanny ear for music lead him to produce music as an individual because finding band members in such a small community was hard if not almost impossible.
In his teenage years, he had a strong relationship with Grunge music including bands like Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Metal/Rock bands like Metallica, Pantera, Slayer and many more. Dark, dreary and heavy music have always caught his ear.
He shares a love for bass music stars like Smooth, Pendulum, Datsik, Excision, L Plus, The Prototypes, Bassnectar and many more. These styles caught up with him and thus a desire to produce his own form of bass music style to express himself.
Spending a number of years experiencing the thriving growth of the Calgary underground birthed a true passion in Erik Aguilar, and unshackled his creativity to give life to the coming phenomenon that is Grey Matters.
Enjoying his formative years setting BC festivals and late night raves as an inspirational backdrop, Aguilar retained the many lessons, and mentors, of music production that would later serve as a springboard for his budding career. Aspirations to join the ranks of the nightlife community that he had rooted himself within manifested with hard work and talent, fully blossoming once he turned to the tables in 2012. Beginning with simple open decks nights at local haunts, he has grown to fill slots for various shows across Alberta, as well as heading down to Costa Rica to smash Bamboo Bass Festival with his drilling sound.
Grey Matters has taken Calgary by storm with his techy, dark neurofunk and drum and bass stylings, and swiftly extended his natural aptitude with an education at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology to initiate his takeover of the production game. He jettisoned himself into the national eye in early 2016 with “Program,” a collaborative release with Mark Instinct (Pantheon, Uplink Audio), another Calgary native who satisfies the bass addiction that runs rampant in this Alberta city. Following his string of successes to current times, it is obvious that Grey Matters is guaranteed to continue his ascension through the ranks of Canadian bass music.
Hailing from Calgary, Canada, Aversive is a bold up and coming DJ/Producer who lives up to her name: Stopping at nothing to avert the masses from the humdrum of ordinary soundscapes while she paves her own path of sonic ingenuity. From Drum and Bass to Trip Hop, Aversive’s sound is original and genuine.
Aversive has been gigging western Canada since 2012, opening the stage for such international icons as FreQ Nasty, Bluetech, Ill Esha, Kursa, Shamanic Technology, and Iris (of Quadrant and Iris). With thousands of Soundcloud plays since her first signed EP, Inner Visions, was released by MalLabel Music in early 2014, Aversive has earned invites to play festivals and groundbreaking events around western Canada and beyond. This includes Bamboo Bass Music Festival (Costa Rica), Awakening Music Festival, Indigo Pulse Music Festival, the Spectrum Stage at Motion Notion Music Festival, Female Arts & Music Exhibition and more! Within months after moving back to her hometown of Calgary in 2014, she was embraced by its thriving Drum and Bass scene. With support from DnB Girls, Come Correct, 403DnB, Footwork Jungle, and CJSW’s Remote
Emissions radio show, Aversive made a name for herself quickly as a DJ/Producer in Calgary. Whether its Liquid, Jungle, or dark Metalheadz Drum and Bass, Aversive knows how to rinse a proper set!
From 2014 into 2016 alone, Aversive has had 9 individual signed releases, on labels including, MalLabel Music (San Francisco, U.S.A.), The Outtallectual Collective (London, U.K.), The Glitch Shop (U.K.), Black Tuna Recordings (Vancouver, Canada), as well as multiple self released EPs.
Her releases have earned praise and review from Bass Music blogs including Afro Monk, The Dankles, DnB Dojo, and DrumNBass.NET. With the enthusiasm and grit of a true visionary, Aversive showcases her kaleidoscopic approach to electronic music production seamlessly. Whether its Drum and Bass,
Trip Hop, or deep psychedelic Bass Music, her unique and enigmatic sound is hard to pass by. Combining influences from both old school and new school sounds, Aversive’s tracks are pleasing to both old school heads and new bass music pioneers. Her sound is dark, expressive, and unyielding, and takes the listener on a journey of imagination and emotion. Stay tuned for much more coming from this diligent female producer in 2016!
